about
No one chooses the worst seat - we just happen to get it. Direct from the tables you don’t want to sit at, we bring you reviews of the restaurants you definitely want to eat at.
Based in Sydney (but keen travellers), we are two average people – with a not-so-average (read: unwavering, undeniable, absolute) passion for food. We love cooking, adore eating, and thrive on the phenomenal foodie scene our harbour city has to offer.
Reflecting on our wining dining escapades, we have noticed a funny oddity that we never quite seem to nab the best seat in the house.
Jonah’s, December 2020: Our waiter leads us into the elegant dining room, and we make a beeline for the front row where one empty table for two remains, overlooking the spectacular cliffs of Whale Beach and straight out to the Pacific. But no: We are ushered to a table in the second row, placed directly behind the aforementioned front row table, shortly to be occupied by an influencer and her boyfriend-of-instagram.
Penfolds Magill, December 2020: As above. Except with front row overlooking the lush vineyards and beyond to the sunset-speckled Adelaide skyline, and empty front row table shortly to be occupied by a woman gently reminding the waiter she’s dined several times and her reluctant husband.
Bennelong, February 2021: As above. Except with front row overlooking the bright lights of Sydney Harbour and empty front row table shortly to be occupied by – to be honest, we can’t remember.
Ragazzi, April 2021: There are three seating options in this fantastic hole-in-the-wall pasta bar. First – booth tables alongside the walls; Second – stools at the bar; Third – a tiny table bang in the middle of options 1 and 2 where you constantly get in everyone’s way. Guess which one we got?
We sound like we’re complaining (we kind of are) – but, in the end, our experiences at these restaurants were so sublime that we genuinely didn’t care where we sat. As long as there’s good food and a vibe, we are there.
TL;DR – We may get the worst seat in the house, but we eat the best food in the biz.
